NORWALK, Ohio. (Aug. 24, 2000) - Laurie Cannister, driver of the Mopar-powered Nicorette Pro Outlaw dragster, earned the second qualifying position during Thursday's activity at the IHRA Mopar Parts World Nationals at Norwalk Raceway Park.

The 1999 Pro Outlaw Rookie of the Year blistered the Ohio quarter mile with a 6.262-second lap at 218.23 mph. Cannister fell short of top-qualifier Neil Parker's 6.151/226.73 combination.

"For the Pro Outlaw cars, the track is fabulous," said the current series point's leader. "We have a good (elapsed) time, which should improve with the cool air tomorrow night. We made a smooth, straight run and the car felt real comfortable."

The Ethanol/Mopar Parts Dodge Avenger Funny Car of Mark Thomas is currently 12th. The defending race champion clocked in at 6.091/229.63.

"We have been really struggling with the setup," Thomas said. "We shook the tires pretty hard. The good news is that we are in the show, which is the point of all this. I would like to be higher and shoot for the number one spot. We'll get it figured out for tomorrow's night session."

TNN will provide tape-delayed coverage of the Mopar Parts World Nationals on Sept. 17.
