NORWALK, OH-- The much anticipated World Nationals have arrived and the Funny Car contingent was set on overdrive for the four day event at Norwalk Raceway Park. Alcohol Funny Car driver Scott Weney went into this weekend's event looking to improve his points standings. With 379 points, Weney still holds tightly to his third position. However, with a first round loss to Dan Roman, Weney will have to rely on the remaining four IHRA events to improve his standings.
Weney opened qualifying with more excitement than one should care to handle. While he launched straight and true, Jimmy Rector had problems and covered every square inch of his own lane. Weney never faltered and stormed to a 6.07 at 229 miles per hour. He continued his bid to move up within the pecking order with a 6.05/232 lap that improved his status from the first session. The final session afforded the team a late-evening 6.135, which offered no improvement in qualifying position. He ended up in the 10th spot and was scheduled to face Danny Roman in the first round.
Charged up and ready to run, Weney underestimated the green light. Roman took advantage of a great headstart, in spite of a tight run with the guard-rail. Weney tried desperately to make up for lost ground, posting a 6.061/234.04 pass, but unable to overcome the starting line loss.
Weney next travels to the IHRA PARTS PRO North American Nationals in Epping, NH., September 10-12. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded a qualifying run on Thursday and Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
