ROCKINGHAM, NC - Mark McElwee joined the IHRA Pro Outlaw tour at the mid-point in 1999 and he managed to finish in the top ten of the points standings. To attain this admirable feat, he combined a high level of intensity and late-rounds finishes. Many wondered if he did that well in a shortened tour, how well he would fare in a full season.

He's giving them an impressive example during the 2000 season. The sophomore Pro Outlaw driver solidified his third place points ranking with a semi-final finish at the Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, NC. Parts failure on the starting line left the Port St. Lucie, Fla.-based, sitting helpless as eventual finalist Mick Snyder went on for the win.

McElwee feels that consistency is the name of the game.

"I'm really pleased with what has transpired during this season," explained McElwee. "Naturally, I'm disappointed that we haven't won a race yet. We are encouraged by these outings."

He had reason to be encouraged after beating Kevin McClain with an impressive 6.132/218.72 during the first round. The PowershieldCoatings.com entry qualified second in the eight-car field.

The next event on the IHRA tour will take place June 2-4, at Grand Bend Motorplex for the Mopar Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol.
