McElwee Continues Impressive Freshman Season, Falls One Round Short Of Finals at Parts Pro North American Nationals

EPPING, NH.-- The road to the final round ended with one round to go. Thus was the case for Mark McElwee in his freshman season of Super Eliminator. The up-and-coming driver was impressive in reaching the semi-finals at the IHRA Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, N.H. This marked his finest finish of the 1999 season.

McElwee failed to have his fuel system prepared in enough time for the first qualifying session and as a result, opted to sit out the session. The problems were rectified in time by borther Artie "Buzz" McElwee for the final session and as a result, he laid down a 6.448/211.93 to qualify solidly in the program.'

The first round afforded the McElwee family an excellent opportunity to showcase their efforts as Mark overcame a holeshot from Scott Ray and passed him with a 6.279/216.58 to 6.339/215.24 decision.

The first round victory paired him against the radical altered of Michael Barclay, who had a bye run in the previous run. Mark made quick work of Barclay and beat him on both ends of the track. He used a .075 holeshot to add insult to injury by taking a 6.244/217.28 to 6.288/211.53 decision.

A much anticipated match between McElwee and Laurie Cannister never materialized as the POWERSHIELD Coatings-sponsored, dragster chewed up a blower belt and came to a stop just past the 60-foot clocks.

McElwee and his Powershield High Performance Coatings Team plans to resume their championship conquest at the IHRA Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NC., September 24 - 26. McElwee, along with each Super Eliminator contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
