Racers set to kick off 2004 at this weekend's InsideTopAlcohol.com Warm-up
SEALY, Texas - Some of the top racers in the country are preparing to kick off the 2004 racing season during this weekend's InsideTopAlcohol.com Warm-up at Lonestar Raceway Park just west of Houston in Sealy, Texas. The event is expected to be one of the quickest in Lonestar Raceway Park's history as weather conditions are prime for the Top Alcohol Dragsters to eclipse Lee Callaway's current 3.66 at 204 mph track record.
The event will feature some of the top names in Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car such as defending four-time Division 5 Champ David Wells, defending two-time Division 4 Champ Shelly Howard, 2002 Division 4 Champ Lee Callaway, James Thompson, Karl Brounkowski, Steve Burck and more. In addition to the Top Alcohol cars, top name sportsman and King of the Strip (heads-up street legal series) competitors will be on hand.
"We're looking forward to coming down," said Wells. "Up here in Iowa, there's snow on the ground and it's way too cold to test. We're looking forward to coming down to Texas and getting to some warmer weather. The conditions should be good to run some good numbers, and we'll be trying to get ready for 2004."
Current track record holder Callaway is ready as well.
"We ran that 3.66 in the middle of July," stated Callaway. "The air was around 3600 ft corrected altitude then, and it should be close to sea level, if not below. We should be able to go quite a bit quicker. With some of the cars that will be there, so will they. We're going to try our best to come back out with the record."
In addition to the action on the track, a special tutorial session, the "Top Alcohol Experience" will be held in David Wells' pit on Saturday. The class, given by InsideTopAlcohol.com's editor Will Hanna, will be a chance for fans to get a close-up look at a Top Alcohol Dragster, and learn more about the car, it's powerplant and what the driver does. The session will culminate with a pre-run warm-up and a question and answer session with Hanna and Wells.
"We want to give the fans an opportunity to get up close and personal with the alcohol cars," stated Hanna. "We're going to start with the basics and work our way into some of the more complex aspects of the car. Then we'll warm the car up, and answer some of the questions. We definitely want the Top Alcohol Experience to be something the fans remember when they leave the track, in addition to the record-breaking runs they will see on the track."
The action kicks off Saturday, with the gates opening at 9 a.m., and testing starting at 10 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Sunday will feature the same schedule. Spectator admission is just $10. Testing is free for all IHRA/NHRA class competitors and King of the Strip competitors.
