Millican stretches Top Fuel winning streak to three at IHRA ACDelco Nationals
Richmond, Va. -- Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, continued his 2003 IHRA Top Fuel winning streak at the ACDelco Nationals by defeating John Smith in the finals. Additionally, the defending ACDelco Nationals champion bettered his Virginia Motorsports Park Top Fuel record, clocking a 4.668 elapsed time in the finals and beating his previous record of 4.687.
Millican qualified in first place with an elapsed time of 4.748 seconds and a speed of 301.07 mph. The Top Fuel drivers only made one qualifying run, as rain on Saturday prevented them from making their final two qualifying attempts. In the first round of eliminations, Millican faced number eight qualifier Danny Dunn of the Wilkesboro Raceway team. Millican edged Dunn with an elapsed time of 4.717 compared to Dunn's 4.927.
In the second round, Millican faced Rhonda Hartman-Smith of the Fram team, a familiar face from the seven NHRA races he has competed in this season. He had a quick reaction time at the start and won with an elapsed time of 4.691 and a speed of 307.23. Millican went on to face Hartman-Smith's husband, John Smith, in the finals. Millican made his fastest pass of the weekend with an elapsed time of 4.668 and a speed of 311.85 mph. Smith lost traction just before half-track and finished with a time of 5.181.
"To make one qualifying run and then get thrown into the fire of eliminations is a tough way to win," said Millican. "We didn't have a lot of time to dwell on the pressure because of the pressure we had in Grand Bend. Besides that, when John and Rhonda show up over here you had better be on your game because they are tough."
This marks Millican's second win at the ACDelco Nationals, as he also won in 2002, and his 23rd career IHRA Top Fuel victory. Millican needs two more wins to tie Don Garlits for first place on the all-time IHRA Top Fuel wins list. He is the current leader in the IHRA Top Fuel points standings, and remains undefeated in IHRA competition in 2003.
Millican and Team Werner/Lehman Racing will race again in two weeks at the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta on June 27-29.
