LAS VEGAS - Andrew Lewis rode his Suzuki straight down The Strip to first place in the Motorcycle division tonight. Carl Cannavo overthrew Paul Bledsoe, winning the Super Quick division.
Lewis, founder of team F.I.R.E.-- Firefighters Involved in Racing for Education-- shot down The Strip at LVMS to take the team's first-ever win. A final-round, near-perfect reaction time of .426-sec. charged Lewis ahead of opponent Dave Phillips. Lewis averaged 151.71 mph, while Phillips reached 132.53 mph.
Super Quick driver Carl Cannavo took the win when contender Paul Bledsoe broke out. Cannavo, in a 1995 Yancer, rocketed down The Strip in 9.034-sec. Bledsoe, driving what he calls his "Forvette" -- a 466-Ford powered 1962 Corvette-- fouled at the starting line with an unfortunate .399-sec. reaction time.
Jerry Mock took first place in the Pro division. Mock won the final round with a reaction time of .504-sec. and a speed of 105.75 mph. Ron Landram earned a respectable second place in a 1967 Chevy Camaro, with a reaction time of .522-sec.
The Sportsman division winner was Mark Meier, driving a 350 small-block Chevy-powered 1972 Vega. Brian Miller placed second.
Lynn Farnum faced Douglas Baker in the final round of the Street division. Farnum was forced to settle for silver after breaking out.
Jerry's Nugget Casino Reaction-Time Bonus Award winners were Andrew Lewis (Motorcycle), Jerry Mock (Pro), Bill Muller (Sportsman) and Becky "Popcorn" Landram (Street).
High School eliminations on Friday night were won by Robbie Irving, 18, who edged out Nick Ariotti. The Gambler was won by Boulder City's Mark Piel, in his 1971 Challenger. Kenny Hodges took second.
Competition continues on The Strip next Friday, June 15, with an open Test 'n' Tune and High School eliminations. The eighth points race of the season for the Jr. Dragsters is scheduled for Saturday night.
