BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Eight International Hot Rod Association drivers are scheduled to participate in a special Race Against Drugs program June 5 at the Bristol (Va.) Middle School. IHRA competitors, law enforcement officials and school and community leaders will gather at the school to meet with students and honor those who earned scholarships through participation in the Race Against Drugs essay contest, 'How Can I Help Win the Race Against Drugs?' IHRA drivers scheduled to attend are five-time Pro Modified World Champion Scotty Cannon; 18-year-old Richie Stevens, current IHRA Pro Stock championship points leader; Paul Romine, current IHRA Top Fuel championship points leader; Von Smith, defending IHRA Alcohol Funny Car champion; Johnny Rocca (Pro Modified); Randy Moore (Pro Modified); Scott Weis (Alcohol Funny Car); and Louis Burris (Pro Modified). Race Against Drugs is a partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the National Child Safety Council, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and 23 motorsports organizations. It is a nationwide program that links motorsports with substance abuse prevention. Race Against Drugs captures the color and excitement of racing and the commitment by America's racing heroes to convey to youth that there is no such thing as 'harmless' drug use. The program at Bristol Middle School will start at 1 p.m. After introduction of drivers and other key speakers, and presentation of scholarships, students will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at a variety of IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series vehicles. The drivers are in town to compete in the 33rd annual Prolong Super Lubricants Spring Nationals presented by Parts Pro, to be held June 6-8 at the Bristol Dragway. (-end-)
