March 28-29, Hot Rod Power Festival, Huntsville Dragway, Huntsville, AL - The second event on the NMCA/Hot Rod racing schedule was a great success with over 21,000 spectators in attendence to watch the fastest street cars in the world battle in out on the 1/8th mile concrete strip. The highly anticipated final round in Pro Street between Tony Christian and Bob Rieger wasn't as close as expected. Rieger, the world record holder and #1 qualifier, was beaten soundly by Christian in the final on Sunday. Christian, who was the points champion in 1995, 1996, and 1997, ran a 4.626 et to defeat Riegers 5.283. Reiger had qualified #1 with a 4.57, while Pat Musi ran a 4.58, and Tony Christian was a .01 behind with a 4.59. In the heat of the moment, Reiger forgot to turn off a switch that limited the engine to 5200 rpm for burnouts. His Transmission Specialities built Powerglide would not shift into 2nd gear dooming his run against Christian.
"I had so much adrenaline going, I just simply forgot to turn off the switch," he said. "We had the light. We got the jump. It just wouldn't shift. It's a case of pilot error."
Other heads-up winners include Junior Griffin in Outlaw Street, Billy Glidden in Super Street, Tim Davis in Hot Street, Gary Rohe in EZ Street, Jimmy Hack in Real Street, and Doug Duell in Nostalgia SS. The winners in the et bracket category were Jimmy Calloway Jr. in Super Pro and Chad Ragan in Pro. For full results and photos visit Huntsville Dragway's website at:
