ROCKINGHAM, NC - Former NHRA touring pro Tony Christian rode a 200 mph wave to the Pro Street Championship in the second annual Hot Rod Magazine Southern Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

Christian, a three-time NHRA Pro Stock Champion in the '80s, benefitted from the early departure of top qualifiers Bob Reiger of San Jose, CA, and Pat Musi of Carteret, NJ, and then coaxed his 1998 Pontiac Firebird to 200.17mph in a semifinal victory over Mike Moran and to 200.13mph in a final found conquest of Danny Scott.

Although he was among the favorites, Christian could not have anticipated such an easy ride to the championship earlier in the day, especially after Reiger had lowered the Pro Street national record for the second time in two days. After qualifying #1 at 7.102 on Saturday, Reiger drove his '98 Firebird to a time of 7.090 seconds in his first round victory over Joe Culver of Marietta, GA. Nevertheless, in a second round battle with Danny Scott of Goodrich, MI, the favorite was guilty of an unexpected foul start, resulting in automatic disqualification.

Other winners Sunday included top qualifiers Rod Saboury of Millers, MD in Outlaw Street:; Jimmy Keen of Palmetto, FL, in Super Street; and Jay Allen of Milan, MI, in Hot Street. Bobby Joysey of Orinville, MI, claimed the EZ Street championship and Dan Paolini of Westerville, OH, drove his '66 Chevy II to victory in Real Street. Kurt Neighbor of Sagamara Hills, OH, took the win in Nostalgia SS while Terry Long of Raeford, NC, won the Super Pro competition and Steve Taylor of Raleigh, NC, took the Pro ET win.

Records were falling all weekend! Pat Musi, a resident of Carteret, NJ, set a National Muscle Car Association speed record of 204.73mph during qualifying. Other record breakers were Randy Adler of Tinley Park, IL, at 200.00mph in Outlaw Street; Jimmy Keen of Palmetto, FL, at 8.078 at 172.97mph in Super Street; Jay Allen of Milan, MI, at 9.301 at 146.48mph in Hot Street; Gary Rohe of Lawrenceburg, IN, at 9.428 at 144.62mph in EZ Street; and James Phipps of Pleasant Plains, OH, at 9.603 in Real Street.
