EPPING, NH - Paul Athey drove Johnny Rocca's 'Ironhorse' Pro Modified to a quarterfinal finish on Sunday at the 6th annual IHRA Amalie Oil North American Nationals at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire. Athey was ousted in the second round of eliminations after qualifying in the top half of the Pro Modified field on Saturday.
Athey piloted Rocca's '51 Mercury to a 6.32 at 225 mph during the opening round of Mopar Pro Modified qualifying to grab the No. 9 spot on the ladder. The 'Ironhorse' returned for Friday's second session under the lights at New England Dragway and improved to a 6.29 at 223 mph to finish the first day of qualifying in the No. 6 position. After failing to improve during Saturday's final two qualifying sessions, Athey and Rocca settled into the top half of the field in the No. 8 position.
The 'Ironhorse' came to starting line for the opening round of Mopar Pro Modified ready to go to war with the No. 9 qualifier, Shannon Jenkins. The race was over before it started when Jenkins left the starting line too soon, leaving a red light glowing on the christmas tree. Athey roared to 6.36 at 220 mph to take the victory and set up a second round match up with current IHRA Pro Modified point's leader, Mike Janis.
Rocca's Mohegan Sun-sponsored entry came to the starting line with Athey looking to take out the top man in Pro Mod. At the flash of the green Janis got the jump on Athey with a .461 to .517 reaction time. The 'Ironhorse' tried to track him down but ran out of race track as Janis took the victory with a 6.29 at 222 mph to Athey's 6.33 222 mph.
