Brinsfield Impressive In Quarter-final Finish At IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals

LEICESTER, NY-- It is said that all good things must come to an end. For Dale Brinsfield, the weekend prior to the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals, he found himself in the winner's circle in Jacksonville, NC., in a quick eight competition opposite such names as Steve Vick. The good fortune seemed to have followed from North Carolina, as Brinsfield reached the quarter-finals at New York International Raceway Park.

Brinsfield was nothing short of impressive in his first qualifying attempt. The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored, driver stormed to a 6.449/216.06, which was good enough for the third spot. Rains washed out the second session of Friday. Brinsfield continued his bid to greatly improve by cranking out a 6.410/218.58. He completed the first session on Saturday in the fourth position. Great weather conditions and a phenomenal stage afforded him what was possibly the great run of his career during the final session. Brinsfield stormed to a 6.379/218.16, good enough for the fifth spot. His seeding matched him against Wally Stroupe in the first round of competition.

The two did battle in a classic match with Brinsfield reaching the finish line first by a 6.462/216.13 to 6.470/210.11 margin. In the quarter-finals it was Tommy Gray and his Undertaker 1954 Corvette. Brinsfield suffered the same fate that he has at the last few races, he was outreacted and outran. It was this that caused his 6.560/213.00 to be no match for Gray's 6.446/219.33.

The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored team plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton, MI., during the weekend of July 31- August 2. Brinsfield, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.

Dylan Mortgage is based in Wilmington, N.C., and employs a staff of 300. They host offices in such states as both the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. According to Caviness, a vast expansion this year will bring new venues such as Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma and Virginia. Dylan is no stranger to championships, as it currently sponsors the two-time national champion in organized softball.
