BRADENTON, FLA. (March 24, 1999) -- Coming off a fine qualifying effort at the rain-delayed IHRA Winter Nationals, second year driver Don Lampus would like nothing better than to notch his first IHRA Top Fuel win at the Amalie Oil/IHRA Nationals at DeSoto Memorial Dragway.
Qualifying second with a 4.744 elapsed time, Lampus was set to face Paul Romine in Sunday's first round eliminations when rain forced postponement of the event. "Naturally, I'm disappointed that we didn't get to race on Sunday, and that the fans didn't get a chance to see some great drag racing, but we'll be back in May," said a smiling Lampus. "We have a good baseline for the car, now we just need to tune it up a bit."
The second stop on the IHRA tour finds the 34 year old driver confident about his chances of capturing his first IHRA Top Fuel win, even though he's never made a pass down the DeSoto quarter mile. "I have confidence in my crew and crew chief, Mike (McLaughlin) that we can produce some pretty good numbers at this race. Mike had us in the show at Darlington on two qualifying passes and we had never raced there before. I'm not saying that we can do that again here at Bradenton, but with 'Mike's Magic' anything is possible," said Lampus. "I'm looking forward to the first qualifying session, that will tell us a lot. And if we can gain some momentum and a little bit of luck, who knows, we just might find the winner's circle here in Bradenton."
The first round of Top Fuel qualifying is scheduled for Friday afternoon, and Lampus has a message for the fans. "Get there early, and stay late. If you've never seen Top Fuel, you'll want to get a good seat in the stands and bring those cameras! After qualifying, stop by our pit area to say hi. We really like meeting and talking to our fans, it's a great bonus that only drag racing offers."
DeSoto Dragway is located south of the Tampa Bay area, just off I-75 South at Exit 42. Turn left and proceed nine miles on State Road 64. For ticket information, call (941) 748-1320.
