CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - Doug Herbert added another member to his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel brain trust with the hiring of veteran Dave Settles as the team's technology consultant. Settles, a former drag racer who has both driven and served as crew chief on Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars, will work with crew chief Larry Frazier during the upcoming 24-race NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) season. "We are very happy to have Settles on our team," said Herbert, who won four times in six final rounds in 1999 while finishing seventh in Winston Series competition. "You can never have too much talent on a team, and Settles only makes us stronger. "Frazier uses the practical approach to racing and tuning while Settles is more analytical, so they should work well together." Settles, from Southlake, Texas, says he'll "help out wherever I can and try to add something to the team." "I know several areas where we expect him to help us a lot," added Herbert. "One area is with a new clutch and blower dyno and fuel flow bench that I've added at the shop and the other is working with my Snap-on dragster that runs IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) races." Settles, who manufactures drag racing fuel pumps, drove Dallas-based Top Fuel and Funny Cars before becoming a crew chief. Among the drivers he worked with are Terry Mullins in Top Fuel and Cruz Pedregon in Funny Car. Settles will make his debut with Herbert and the Snap-on Racing team at the pre-season test session at Phoenix, Jan. 13-17.
