Darlington International Dragway's Premiere Doorslammer Test Session & Race

January 29, 1999

DARLINGTON, SC--- The Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-Up may be reserved for doorslammer eliminations, but that's not going to stop three of the nation's finest fuel-burning Harley-Davidsons from blistering the Darlington International Dragway asphalt. In the world of Harley drag racing, this potent breed of bike has no equal.

International Hot Rod Association President Bill Bader, who became the automotive first sanctioning body leader to add fuel Harleys to his program on a full-time basis, admitted that this type of racing vehicle operates in much the same fashion as he does. In a recent article regarding these bikes, the colorful Bader commented, "I love the sight, the smell, the sound and the danger involved. It takes total concentration because they're always on the ragged edge. Someone once told me, 'Bader, you're always on the ragged edge.' That's exactly why I have these guys here racing with us."

Don't expect anything less than a ferocious showing as local favorite and series runner-up Bill Furr from Orangeburg, S.C., straddles his scoot for some test runs. The trusty veteran finished second in the IHRA/Screamin' Eagle Series points chase and has the potential to run as quick as 6.6 seconds at over 200 mph. Riders such as Steve Moore and the Maryland-based Jamie Emery, who was a top ten finisher in the IHRA points standings as well.

The Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-Up will feature unlimited testing runs on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 17-20. Drivers are given free testing under the stipulation that they compete in an open race on Saturday. Qualifying for the race will begin with sessions on Saturday at 10 AM and at Noon. Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM
