Romine, Jenkins lead IHRA Snap-on Finals winners

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Paul Romine put an exclamation point on his 1997 IHRA Top Fuel World Championship by winning the second-annual Snap-on Finals at Darlington International Dragway Saturday. It was the fourth win for the Indianapolis driver in five final rounds, and second at Darlington this season. The race was the season-ending event on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Romine, who established a new elapsed time track record at 4.84 seconds during Saturday's eliminations, had to pedal his CARQUEST Auto Parts-sponsored dragster in a side-by-side, tire-smoking final round against first-time finalist Steve Smith. Romine covered the distance in 5.10 seconds at 246 miles per hour, to Smith's slower 8.25, 94.06. "We're really happy getting this win because it brings closure to the season for this team," said Romine, 50. "Even though we clinched the championship when we were here earlier, we still wanted to win this race. And it was tough. We had some very stout cars out here this weekend. I didn't take anyone for granted." Romine said he was a little disappointed in the performance in the final round. Romine had to pedal his car off the starting line and battle tire spin all the way down the track. "We had the car loaded up for the final and wanted to put on a good show for the fans," Romine said. "Darlington is a great track, but we were a little surprised that it didn't come around for the Top Fuel cars. It was good here last week during testing, but something changed during the course of the weekend." Shannon Jenkins claimed his first IHRA Pro Modified World Championship by beating John Bartunek in the final. Jenkins, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., recorded the quickest nitrous pass ever in his 1941 Willys in the final, running 6.42, 217.18 for the win. Cleveland, Ohio's Angelo Alesci set a new IHRA elapsed time world record (6.701 seconds) in an overdue final round victory over Pete Berner. Chattanooga, Tenn.'s Floyd Cheek, winner of the $20,000 Sunoco Pro Stock Showdown Friday, earned his first IHRA Pro Stock World Championship after advancing to the second round during eliminations. In Alcohol Funny Car, Scott Weney outran new IHRA World Champion Jimmy Rector of Vernon, Ala. in a close final. Weney used a holeshot and ran 6.06, 232.43 to defeat Rector's quicker 6.03, 231.60. IHRA Snap-on Tools World Championships in sportsman categories were earned by Roy Holcomb of Harrison Township, Mich. (Top Dragster); Lilburn, Ga.'s Ronnie Davis (Top Sportsman); Anthony Bertozzi of Richmond, Va. (Modified and Super Stock); Pacolet Mills, S.C.'s Harold Gault (Stock); Cynthiana, Ky.'s Rusty Cook (Super Rod); Kevin Scales of Spartanburg, S.C. (Quick Rod); and Florence native B.D. Parker (Hot Rod).
