Jenkins Reaches Quarter-Finals At Rain-Delayed IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals

DARLINGTON, SC-- Shannon Jenkins left Darlington in March as the quickest qualified nitrous-injected Pro Modified at the 27th annual, IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals. However, it was an alternate that sent him packing in competition. Jenkins put a gate job on Rickie Smith, who got into the field as an alternate only to have have his foe outmuscle him on the top end.

Jenkins became the second quickest qualifier during the initial March date when he covered the quarter mile with a 6.323 elapsed time at 218.44 miles per hour hour. The run was only .007 slower than his record-setting 6.316 lap at the 1998 World Finals in Shreveport, La. He was paired opposite Tim McAmis in the first round.

The "Iceman" froze former Pro Modified champion Tim McAmis in the first round with a quicker reaction and a 6.48/215 to 6.50/214. He then matched wits in a battle of starting line wizards with Rickie Smith. Jenkins was the quicker out of the gate, but it was Smith's more aerodynamic 1963 Corvette cutting through the air better with a 6.516/214.08 to 6.538/192.96 decision.

Jenkins plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA Amalie Summer Nationals in Cordova, Ill., June 18-20. Jenkins, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of Drag Review.
