ROMINE GETS A SECOND CHANCE AT THE DARLINGTON
DARLINGTON, S.C. (May 4, 1999) -- Two months ago at the IHRA season opening event, the Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals at Darlington International Dragway, two-time and defending IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Paul Romine began the march toward a third Snap-on Drag Racing Series World Championship. When the CARQUEST team arrived at Darlington, unseasonable cool weather greeted the team. With a tricky track, Romine pedaled his 6,000 horsepower dragster down the slippery track to qualify 7th with an off the pace 6.375 elapsed time at 147.99 mph. Final eliminations were scheduled to begin Sunday, March 15, but the cold weather was accompanied by rain Sunday morning, forcing IHRA officials to postpone the event until Saturday, May 8th.
"Although we do not wish events are postponed, the Winter Nationals rainout worked in our favor," said Romine, who has since earned two semi-final finishes at the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals and the Holley Spring Nationals. "In three attempts down the track, we never got the car to stick, resulting in minimal data to work with on race day. Now with us going back, it is like starting all over, we will receive one check out pass in the morning, then go into round one hopefully with a solid pass under our belts."
The CARQUEST team will receive one checkout pass Saturday morning with round one set to begin at 2 p.m. (EDT). Romine is scheduled to race Don Lampus, who recently earned a runner-up finish at the most recent IHRA race, the Holley Spring Nationals in Rockingham, N.C. Lifetime Romine is 1-1 against Lampus with Lampus winning their last meeting at the 1998 IHRA North American Nationals in Epping, NH.
