Castellana Falls Short In IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals Qualifying

DARLINGTON, SC --- The 1999 IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals proved to be more difficult than imagined for Mike Castellana, driver of the Western Beef sponsored '57 Chevy Pro-Modified. The veteran Supermarket chain owner saw his bid to win the race fall short by failing to qualify for the event. He ran the quickest laps on his new Tim McAmis Race Cars prepared entry only to end up first alternate in the quickest-ever Pro Modified field.

"Every Pro Modified that came to Darlington had the intention of winning the race, " Castellana explained. "You never go into a race thinking you won't qualify, you have to be confident in the car, your crew, and your ability to drive. Ending up seventeenth in qualifying, with a 6.51/ 211, is not where I wanted to be. I guess we will just move on to Bradenton and attempt to improve there."

In year's past, Darlington International Dragway has generally been good to the Westbury, N.Y. based driver. In contrast to this weekend, preseason testing at this facility proved to be a great success as he wound up being the fourth quickest of the crucial Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-up test sessions.

Mike Castellana's Western Beef /Awesome Motorsports team will continue their championship conquest at the Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., March 26-28. Each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. The event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine
