Montecalvo Scores Runner-Up At The Groundhog Warm-Up, Emerges As Quickest Car Of The Event

DARLINGTON, SC-- John Montecalvo did everything perfect except win the event. The veteran Pro Stock driver from Center Moriches, NY made a lasting impression on the Pro Stock contingent at the Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-Up as he posted consecutive 6.6 laps in his Citgo-sponsored, Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He dropped a tough final round opposite Chris Holbrook.

Montecalvo was disappointed in the loss that saw both drivers card 6.71 elapsed times, but he was very much pleased in the consistency shown during the course of the testing session. Montecalvo added, "It was a big boost for our team to do well down here. We love the race track at Darlington and any chance we get to run here, we take it. This gives us a great baseline to work off of for the Winter Nationals."

Crewchief Billy Wagner and the hard working crew for Montecalvo provided a quick race car for their driver, who carded a 6.650/207.46 best during Thursday's session. The buzz throughout the pits was that the team was making serious bid for the 6.5 second zone. Sources report that the car came to the final round with every intention of achieving the feat.

The next event for the Citgo team will be the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals, March 12-14. Montecalvo, along with the rest of the Pro Stock contingent, will take assault on the Darlington International Dragway racing surface for the start of the 1999 season. Qualifying will begin with two sessions on Friday, followed by another two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated to begin at Noon on Sunday
