Brinsfield Regroups From Horrific Crash To Compete At IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals

DARLINGTON, SC--- Dale Brinsfield had two objectives coming into the preseason test session at Darlington International Dragway. He had hoped to break in a new engine from veteran builder Gene Fulton. The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored driver hoped to follow up that with a car capable of hitting the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals with a head start on the rest of the Pro Modified contingent. He was 50-percent successful.

His shortcoming was certainly not in the engine department as he posted a 6.4 second lap on the first full pass with his trusty 1963 Corvette. He fell several steps behind the pack when an untimely crash totalled his entry. Brinsfield managed to find a new car up for sale at Tommy Mauney's TM Race Car shop that was destined for former Pro Mod racer Brian Gahm. The 1968 Camaro has been completed in time and will make its competition debut at the IHRA Winter Nationals.

Brinsfield just feels fortunate to be able to run at Darlington. He adds, "For us to find a car this close to Darlington and feel that we are still competitive is a miracle. We are going to approach our first race and establish a baseline and work off of that. I'm not expected miracles, but I'm not pushing them aside."

Brinsfield plans to open his championship conquest at the IHRA Prolong Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., March 12-14. Brinsfield, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine
