CORDOVA, Ill. - SUMMIT FastNews - Order after one round of qualifying in Top Dragster at the 19th annual Summer Nationals presented by Parts Plus:
Doug Herbert piloted his Snap-On backed Top Fueler to the number one spot at the 19th annual Summer Nationals presented by Parts Plus & LOHSE Automotive in Cordova, Illinois. During the Champion Spark Plugs Night of Fire the Cherryville, N.C. driver streaked to a 4.887 seconds at 297.29 miles per hour. Herbert will face off against Bruce Litton who rounded out the eight qualifiers for Sunday's show.
The real news of the day came during the first round of qualifying when first time competitor Don Lampus rocketed his Top Fueler to a picture perfect pass of 4.950 seconds at 295.08 mile per hour. This was good for the number two spot after round one, but he lost traction in round two and had to settle for his earlier time. That landed him in the fourth spot and will match the rookie against defending event champion Tommy Johnson Jr. in round one tomorrow.
Jim McClure, coming back from a terrible engine explosion earlier this year in Atlanta, led the wild Top Fuel Harley qualifying. He ran a 6.836 seconds at 203.58 mile per hour in round two of qualifying today. Ray Price rounded out the eight-bike field with his pass of 7.080 seconds at 169.21 miles per hour.
Scott Weney lead the way in Alcohol Funny Car qualifying with a 6.036 pass at 227.92 miles per hour in the night session. Eric Hinderberger qualified number 16 for the show on his one and only pass with a run of 6.796 seconds at 184.55 miles per hour.
In Pro Mod Scotty Cannon ran the quickest pass in IHRA history when he fired a 6.396 seconds at 217.00 mile per hour shot in the cool Saturday night air. Floyd Cheek finished atop the Pro Stock ranks with an elapsed time of 6.822 seconds at 202.76 mile per hour. The Pro Stock points chase will tighten up after this event because number one and two in points did not qualify. Dave Price qualified number one in the new Super Eliminator category with a 6.402 seconds at 213.54 miles per hour.
All the Sportsman categories ran one round of eliminations today and will resume with round two at 9:30 am CDT on Sunday followed by round one of Professional eliminations at noon.
The Champion Spark Plug Night of Fire was capped off with an excellent fireworks display after the jet dragsters and the Shockwave jet truck made exhibition passes.
