Muldowney leads qualifying at Raybestos Summer Nationals CORDOVA, Ill. -- Shirley Muldowney led Top Fuel qualifying Friday at the 18th annual Raybestos Summer Nationals presented by Parts Plus and Giant-Whitlock at Cordova Dragway Park. The Armada, Mich. driver established a new track record for the quarter-mile that sits along the banks of the Mississippi River. Muldowney covered the distance in 4.879 seconds at 297.81 miles per hour. Jim Bailey, who ran 4.97, 285.26 and Paul Romine (5.10, 259.74) followed in the qualifying order. Cleveland, Ohio's Angelo Alesci led Pro Stock qualifying with a track record 6.806, 200.44 effort in his 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Two local favorites -- Tony Gillig and Pete Berner -- were second and third in the Pro Stock order. In first round Pro Stock qualifying, Billy Huff of Shepherdsville, Ky., rolled his Auto Ventshade sponsored Pontiac in the shut down area when his parachutes didn't deploy after the run. Huff wasn't injured, but his car suffered severe damage. Michael Martin powered his 1963 Corvette to the top spot and a new Pro Modified track record, running 6.600, 209.59. Richmond, Va.'s Scott Weis was the class of the Alcohol Funny Car field, driving his Sherwin-Williams Paints Dodge Avenger to a track-best of 5.995, 228.89.
