Muldowney sets new IHRA World Record in Raybestos Summer Nationals

CORDOVA, Ill. -- Shirley Muldowney established a new IHRA elapsed time world record in final professional qualifying during Saturday's Champion Spark Plugs Night of Fire at Cordova Dragway Park's Raybestos Summer Nationals presented by Parts Plus and Giant-Whitlock. The race is the fourth of eight national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series. Muldowney, who remained the race's top qualifier in the division, covered the quarter-mile in 4.861 seconds at 272 miles per hour. The run was also a track record. With the record-setting run, Muldowney gained a 100 point bonus and the lead in the Top Fuel point standings in the IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series. Wally Stroupe, of Kings Mountain, N.C., drove his 1963 Corvette to a new track record in Pro Modified, running 6.549 seconds, 213.06 mph. Stroupe just edged former IHRA Pro Mod World Champion Tommy Mauney for the top qualifying position. Mauney ran 6.555, 210.28 in his '63 Vette. Cleveland, Ohio's Angelo Alesci remained the quickest in Pro Stock (6.806, 200.44) while Richmond, Va.'s Scott Weis (5.995, 228.89) stayed on top in Alcohol Funny Car. Saturday's standing-room-only attendance, estimated at 15,000, is the largest in the history of Cordova Dragway Park. Final eliminations for the Raybestos Summer Nationals begin Sunday at noon.
