IHRA Top Fuel points chase heats up entering Summer Nationals
INDIANAPOLIS (June 29, 1998) -- A year ago at the IHRA Summer Nationals at Cordova Dragway Park, Paul Romine debuted a new car at the event to replaced the one he destroyed in a blowover in Bristol, TN. With the new car he earned a semi-final finish, then reeled off four consecutive final round appearances following the event, with three wins, to capture his first IHRA Top Fuel World Championship.
Romine and his CARQUEST team are hoping for similar results this season except they wants to start their winning streak earlier, July 3-5 at the 19th annual IHRA Summer Nationals at Cordova Dragway Park, Cordova, ILL.
“We really need a win at Cordova,” Romine said. “Last season after the event we had great success with three wins to finish the season and we really got accustom to having our picture taken at the end of the day. Hopefully at Cordova we’ll be able to reintroduce ourselves to the photographers.”
Romine is currently second in IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing points, trailing points leader Tommy Johnson, Jr. by 770 points. At the most recent IHRA national event, the Southern Nationals, May 1-3 in Darlington, S.C., Johnson, Jr. and Romine met in the final round with Johnson, Jr. getting the win, his second of the season.
Tommy’s the guy to stop right now,” Romine said. “His team has been impressive dating back to last season’s Summer Nationals when they won the event and I’m sure they’ll be ready to defend their title so they can hold on to the points lead.”
The Summer Nationals at Cordova kicks off two consecutive weekends of IHRA drag racing with the tour moving on to Rochester, NY, July 10-12 for the CARQUEST Empire Nationals. Top Fuel qualifying for the Summer Nationals is scheduled to begin Friday, July 3rd at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
