Millican Expected to Clinch Third IHRA Top Fuel Championship in Rockingham

Chicago - Clay Millican of Team Werner/Lehman Racing, the 2001 and 2002 IHRA Top Fuel Champion, will race in his final two Top Fuel eliminations for the 2003 season in Rockingham, N.C., on October 17-19 at the Rockingham Dragway, and looks to clinch his third consecutive Top Fuel Championship.

Millican will first compete in the eliminations for the Spring Nationals, which were rained out in March. He will complete three qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday for the World Finals, which will be contested on Sunday. Millican is very familiar with "The Rock", as the dragway is commonly referred to, as he won his first two championships at this track. Additionally, he holds the track's speed record with 322.81 mph.

"I am really excited to go to Rockingham and clinch the third straight championship for Team Werner/Lehman Racing," said Millican. "My crew has worked so hard all season long, and winning our third championship is going to be awesome!"

Millican has won seven of his nine races this season, and is currently 246 points ahead of his nearest competitor, Bruce Litton, in the Top Fuel points standings. Litton is the only driver to beat Millican this season. The two have faced-off in 16 final rounds during their careers, with Millican coming out victorious in 13 of those races.

In his last race, the President's Cup Nationals in Budds Creek, Md., Millican and Litton met in the final round for the sixth time this year. Both drivers lost traction and had problems throughout the pass, but Millican's Goodyear Eagle Pd belt stayed on, while Litton's conventional belt broke, and Millican was able to win the race with an elapsed time of 7.385 to Litton's 11.107. This marked Millican's 100th round win in IHRA Top Fuel competition.

Earlier this season, Millican became the winningest Top Fuel driver in IHRA history when he broke Don Garlits' 24-year-old record of 25 wins. Millican got his 26th career win in just three and a half seasons at the Northern Nationals in Martin, Mich. He has since won two more races, bringing his career win total to 28.

Sad News from the team:
Clay Millican's mother sustained a gunshot would to the head on the morning of October 8th while working at the family store. Mrs. Millican was transported to Med Regional Medical Center in Memphis, she was released yesterday. Mrs. Millican is expected to make a full recovery.

The assailant has been apprehended.

"Momma is just amazing," said Millican. "To be shot in the head yesterday and checked out of the hospital today is remarkable. She is such a strong woman and we are just so lucky that she is okay. She looks great and is in good spirits. Once everything has healed, she'll be as good as new."

Adhering to his family's wishes, especially those of Momma, Millican will race in the NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals in Dallas this weekend as planned.
