Chicago - Clay Millican and Lehman Racing have announced their plans to continue racing in the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) in 2004 with primary sponsor Werner Enterprises, and will attempt to win their fourth consecutive Top Fuel Championship, while also competing a limited National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) schedule.
"I am so excited to be back with Werner Enterprises and going for our fourth Championship," said Millican, who is entering his fifth year as a full-time Top Fuel driver. "Our team has been really pumped up all winter, and we can't wait to get back on the racetrack."
The team, which won all of its past three championships with Werner Enterprises as its primary sponsor, will also attempt to break the record for the number of IHRA career victories. Last season, Team Werner broke the record for Top Fuel wins, surpassing legendary racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' mark of 25 wins. The team now has 30 IHRA victories, and needs just two more to tie Rickie Smith as the all-time winningest IHRA driver in any professional class. Smith has a combined 32 wins in Pro Stock and Pro Mod.
"We have enjoyed a successful relationship with Werner Enterprises for the past three years, and we are excited about the opportunity to go for a fourth championship and another IHRA record with them," said Team Owner Peter Lehman.
The team will open the season at the IHRA Amalie Oil Texas Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, on March 26-28. In last year's inaugural event, Millican set a new IHRA Top Fuel elapsed time record with 4.591, becoming the first IHRA driver to ever go down the quarter mile strip in the 4.5-second range. It marked the first of his 10 wins in the 2003 season.
In addition to their 12-race IHRA schedule, the team will compete in 10-12 NHRA national events, which have yet to be determined.
