Grand Bend, Ontario - While campaigning the Cutler-Hammer and Pace American colors in Canada, the Can-Am team comprised of Carl Spiering (Canada) and Dave Persico (US) did their sponsors proud by winning the Quick 16 this past weekend.
Grand Bend Motorplex, home of the IHRA Canadian Nationals, hosted the Stratford Spectacular, with the class to watch being the "Quick 16". This was a class for the quickest 16 cars on the premises including entries from funny car, dragster and pro modified. Thousands of fans and participants were on hand for this event. "Except for the lack of presence from the Pro teams you would think this was a National Event" commented driver and team owner Spiering.
The race actually got off to a slow start because of severe rain on Saturday, which gave way to unbearable weather on Sunday with immense heat, high humidity and extremely bad air. First round of competition did not occur until 6:30 PM Sunday night. The bad air gave the ToyzShop Motorsports' some concern about their supercharged entry because these power-plants are known not to adapt to this kind of climate. After several 6.40 second runs during eliminations, a second round win by 6 one thousands of a second, and a final round victory, Carl Spiering drove to his first win of the year by 11:30 PM.
"Whether it is a National Event or Spectacular like this one, a win still feels good. Our team has struggled with consistency with in the past, but this new Road Warrior III '57 Chevy is fantastic. We are especially thankful to our sponsors and supporters. A crew from Cutler-Hammer was here this weekend to lend their support and enjoy drag racing at it's finest in Canada," replied Spiering.
The next stop for the team is once again Grand Bend Motorplex on August 4-5 for the ECW Meltdown featuring superstars from the ECW/WWF, full Pro Modified Racing and live music by Big Sugar.
