BUDDS CREEK, MD.-- Alcohol Funny Car driver Scott Weney stormed into the Budd's Creek President's Cup with intentions to bump up his points status. Weney may not be able to overtake the unofficial Funny Car Champion in points, but third place was obviously not where he wanted to be. Rushing the competition throughout qualifying runs, Weney was in the third spot in the ranks. Taking every advantage he could grab in eliminations took Weney all the way to the semi-finals where he was faced with the challenge of the champion.
Weney covered a lot of ground en-route to posting a respectable 6.071.224.21, good enough for the second spot. He opted to sit out the second session.
Weney stepped up in the third session for his quickest run of the weekend. The veteran driver hammered out a 6.00/233.38 to secure his spot solidly in the field. He failed to improve during the evening session. He ended up as the third quickest qualifier and is scheduled to face Bruce Peterson, Jr. in the first round of eliminations.
Weney wasted no time at the start and pounded the quarter-mile with a 6.040/235.19 for a first round win against Peterson's losing 6.309/203.12.
Weney took it to the limit in the second round of eliminations against Tony Bogolo. With a slight advantage on the start, Weney and Bogolo both shook the tires, but Weney was able to drive out of it, leaving Bogolo in his own cloud of smoke.
Weney posted a winning 6.083/232.31, and faced the unofficial Funny Car Champion, Von Smith in the semi-finals.
This showdown between Weney and Smith has played out many times this season. But this scenario would not end in his favor. Weney took a slight edge at the starting line and posted a 5.990/235.80, but could not hold off Smith's 5.915/237.67 at the finish.
On a more positive note, Dan Northrop won Quick Rod driving Weney's, S&W Race Cars-sponsored dragster. He waded though a tough field, stopping former Top Dragster World Champion Tom Dauber.
