Lee looking to stay hot in Budds Creek
BUDDS CREEK, Md. - Hot off of two straight final round appearances, IHRA Torco Pro Nitro Funny Car driver Paul Lee and the Rislone Engine Treatment/J&B Motorsports team will be looking to keep rolling during this weekend's IHRA Torco Race Fuels President's Cup Nationals Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Md. In seven IHRA events this season, Lee has runner-upped at three, and hopes to log their first win this weekend.
Lee, from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., played the role of championship spoiler last weekend, taking out title hopefuls Bob Gilbertson and Jack Wyatt on his way to the final in Toronto. The team currently sits seventh in IHRA points, and hopes to move into the top five by season's end.
"The top five has been our goal since bringing Rislone on board," said Team Owner Jeff McGaffic. "We're just going to go run the car this weekend, keep doing what we're doing and keep having fun. We want to stay consistent and take what the race track gives us. If we can do that, we should be in good shape and make a good showing for Rislone, Allied Machine, Justice Brothers and Kimberly Clark."
Despite having not raced at MIR, Lee and McGaffic are relying on the experience of their tuner Jimbo Ermalovich.
"Jimbo has seen a lot of these IHRA tracks that we haven't, which is a big asset to us," stated McGaffic. "We want to continually improve the performance of the car and go some rounds. We're going to continue monitoring some of the mechanical issues we had earlier in the year to ensure they don't pop up again."
Qualifying begins on Friday and concludes evening with the "Night of Fire" program. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
