BUDDS CREEK, MD..-- John Montecalvo appeared to be on course to for a third consecutive final round finish. However, parts breakage on the starting line during the semi-finals of the EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com President’s Cup Nationals in Budds Creek, Md., ended his bid.
The event was touch and go for the Citgo-sponsored team. Montecalvo let his intentions be known in the first qualifying session as he stormed to a 6.675/208.94 to pace the first session. He came to the line loaded for bear and crewchief Billy Wagner’s tuning efforts were rewarded as Montecalvo stepped up to a 6.640/208.52. He ended the first day of qualifying as the second quickest qualifier.
Montecalvo failed to improved and drifted out of the groove, slowing to an 8.29/103.84. No improvement came during the final session and he ended qualifying as the second quickest. He was scheduled to face Wayne Bishop in the first round of eliminations.
He made easy work of Bishop with an outstanding 6.708/208.55.
Montecalvo then proved that he was the king of the Chevrolet camp as he holeshot Steve Spiess and outmuscled him to the finish line. The Center Moriches, NY.,-based, driver scored victory with a 6.703/208.01.
The semi-finals provided a rematch of the CARQUEST Autumn Nationals. However, when the green light flashed, the white Chevrolet sat motionless on the starting line.
