Montecalvo Impresses Multitude At President's Cup Nationals With Semi-final Finish

BUDDS CREEK, MD.-- One classic driving job after another and John Montecalvo found himself in the semi-finals bidding for his first IHRA/Snap-On Tools Pro Stock oscar of the 1998 season. However, an untimely foul start opposite Tom Lee spoiled his bid at the President's Cup Nationals.

"We are real pleased that we went as far as we did," explained Montecalvo. "I would like to thank my crew, they worked overtime to make us very competitive when adversity jumped into the forefront."

For Montecalvo, the Center Moriches, N.Y., based driver, adversity reared its head from the start. He seriously wounded his motor necessitating a powerplant change. He still managed to qualify 5th (in the quickest-ever Pro Stock field) with a 6.705/204.98. He faced a redlighting Jerry Yeoman in the first round and then knocked off Tony Gillig in the quarters.

He faced Tom Lee in the semi-finals and knowing full well that he had to push the edge of the envelope, fouled with a .338 reaction. Montecalvo aborted the run and Lee advanced to the final round.
