Breakage Gets The Best Of Brinsfield, Fails To Make Cut At EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com President's Cup Nats
BUDDS CREEK, MD.-- Just when Dale Brinsfield appeared to have overcome his early-season woes and seemed to have a top five lock in the points standings for the 1999 season, adversity set in and the Dylan Mortgage-sponsored, failed to make the tough cut at the EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com Nationals in Budds Creek, Md. The race continued a tradition which mandates that whenever Brinsfield breaks on the line during one of his qualifying attempts, that he's a spectator on Sunday. A broken lifter during the third qualifying session forced him out of the program when his comrades stepped up and made the bump spot even tougher to crack.
Brinsfield admits, that while this is a trend that needs to change, it's also one that no racer can help.
"We are always at the mercy of our machine," explained an obviously dejected Brinsfield. "I wanted to really race in this event real bad. But, what happened to us is a part of racing we must all endure at one time. We'll be back. Our season is not complete."
In Friday's qualifying, Brinsfield set up the car for a decent baseline and accomplished his feat by cranking out a 6.538/216.41. That put him into the 11th spot. He came out with every intention of improving during the evening session, but when the car drifted towards the center-line, Brinsfield did a masterful job of correcting and keeping it in his own lane.
During the third session, Brinsfield admitted that he had the car tuned to run a mid-6.4 second pass. However, he never got the opportunity as his Camaro suffered the aforementioned parts failure on the starting line and never got to run. The lost run was costly. Brinsfield was unable to crack the 6.47 bump with his last gasp 6.51. He failed to qualify, accounting for first DNQ since the season-opener in Darlington, SC.
This season has been a roller-coaster of emotions for Brinsfield. He opened by making the finals of the Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-up, but crashed in the final round destroying the car. He regrouped and eventually made his way into the points standings on the strength of two semi-final finishes. Brinsfield also set the World Record for Speed in the Pro Modified division at the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.
The Dylan Mortgage-sponsored team concludes their 1999 season at the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Finals in Shreveport, La.., during the weekend of October 15 - 17. Brinsfield, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday.
