Romine thunders to quickest IHRA Top Fuel pass at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Paul Romine recorded the quickest Top Fuel run in IHRA history during qualifying Saturday at the inaugural All Pro Bumper-to-Bumper / Prolong Super Lubricants Autumn Chase Nationals presented by Marcus Cable. The race is the eighth of nine national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Romine, driving the CARQUEST Auto Parts sponsored dragster, covered the legendary Thunder Valley quarter-mile in 4.742 seconds at 303.16 miles per hour. That elapsed time was also a Bristol Dragway track record. The Indianapolis racer, who suffered Bristol Dragway's second-ever 'blowover' at the June Prolong Super Lubricants Spring Nationals, will look to convert both ends of his run into IHRA world records during final eliminations, which begin at 12 noon Sunday. Romine, who leads the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series Top Fuel point standings, can accomplish that by running within the required one percent during any elimination pass tomorrow. Romine's run was one of several top performances in the quickest IHRA Top Fuel field in history. Doug Herbert is second with a 4.888, 303.50; Bruce Litton 4.892, 300.40; Shirley Muldowney 4.897, 302.96; and Dave Bieneman 4.988, 290.19 occupy positions 3-5. Muldowney picked up additional Snap-on World Championship bonus points for setting a new IHRA speed world record at 303.71 miles per hour during the Double Kwik Markets Night of Fire final qualifying session. That effort also stood as a track record. Other professional category top qualifiers include Lake Zurich, Ill.'s Tony Gillig in Pro Stock (6.835, 203.25); Ted Smith of Smithfield, Pa. in Pro Modified (6.573, 211.43); and Von Smith of Oak Ridge, Tenn. in Alcohol Funny Car (6.039, 237.42).
