Johnny Rocca Dominates Early Houston Raceway Park Test Session!
BAYTOWN, TX— Johnny Rocca unleashed a blast at the annual preseason test and tune meet hosted by Houston Raceway Park. The veteran Pro Modified driver from Leesburg, Virginia strayed from his IHRA legal combination and increased the overdrive percentage on his newly legal, high-helix supercharger and the result was one of the quickest times in doorslammer history. Running at a 50% overdrive percentage, Rocca’s ‘49 Mercury covered the quarter-mile with a 6.378/222.93 run. The run might have impressed many, but Rocca wasn’t so pleased. “I am marginally impressed with our runs at the legal specs,” confided Rocca. “We were able to test and not damage many parts, but the runs that he had hoped for never materialized. There is still a lot of things that need to be hammered out if the blown cars are to be competitive in 1998.” Rocca opted for his outlaw set-up to compete in a special eight-car shootout which included supercharged doorslammers on nitromethane. He finished as a semi-finalist when his car lost fire backing up from a burnout. His run set the official doorslammer speed and elapsed time records at Houston Raceway Park with his 6.73/222.93. A day earlier, running with air at minus 800 feet, Rocca clocked off legal times such as a 6.48, 6.50 and a 6.51.
