If you're a fan of seeing potential IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series quarter-mile records being broken, Steele, Alabama will be the place for you September 16th, 17th, and 18th for the 1st Annual Alabama Nitrous Nationals. Alabama International Dragway in Steele, Alabama currently holds the quarter-mile IHRA World Recordsfor Pro Stock speed (205.38 Doug Kirk, 4/95), Pro Stock e.t. (6.738 Mike Bell, 4/95), Pro Modified speed (215.87 Scotty Cannon, 4/95), Pro Modified e.t. (6.500 Scotty Cannon, 4/95), and Alcohol Funny Car speed (237.52 Todd Paton, 4/95). Not only will IHRA World Records being in jeopardy at Steele, but also will the 1995 Championship chase, which is fierce in all three Professional categories being contested. Top Fuel will not be contested at Steele. IHRA Mountain Motor Pro Stock entering the Alabama Nitrous Nationals sees Mike Bell in the Roy Hill Drag Racing School Ford Thunderbird leading the points standings with 5960 points, but close behind are Doug Kirk in the Kirk Trucking Oldsmobile Cutlass with 5890 points and Robert Patrick in the Ford Quality Care Mustang with 5690. Pro Modified continues to be led in points by chassis builder Tommy Mauney in his home built 1941 Willys with 6960 points, but Pat Moore in the Larry Nance Catch 22 1969 Camaro follows close behind with 6880 points and 4-time IHRA Pro Modified World Champion Scotty Cannon in his 1941 On-Sat Magazine Willys continues to close the gap between him and the top two drivers. Cannon, who has virtually been out of the Pro Modified World Championship hunt all season has won the last two events and now trails the top spot held by Mauney by a mere 440 points. The 1995 IHRA Alcohol Funny Car World Championship has continued to be a struggle between two former IHRA World Champions, Mark Thomas and Todd Paton. Paton, who drives the Ultimate Pet Care 1995 Oldsmobile Acheiva leads defending World Champion Mark Thomas and his 1995 Ethanol Performs Dodge Avenger by just 410 points. The 1995 IHRA Alabama Nitrous Nationals will kick off Friday, September 16th with two qualifying sessions in the professional categories. Saturday, September 17th will see another two qualifying sessions in the professional categories, plus the last chance for drivers to qualify for the Shootout programs to be held in conjunction with the IHRA Fall Nationals in Bristol, Tennessee. The Alabama Nitrous Nationals professional class eliminations will be shown on ESPN, October 8th at 8:00pm eastern and sportsman classes, October 11th at 3:30am eastern.
