Triumph for Volkswagen and Carlos Sainz in Hungary and Romania

Overall victory of Carlos Sainz/Michel Perin (E/F) in the Volkswagen Race Touareg and third position for Dieter Depping/Timo Gottschalk (D/D) as well as seven of seven possible stage victories: at the new Central Europe Rally through Hungary and and Romania run by the "Dakar" organiser A.S.O., Volkswagen started to a new era of cross-country rally sport with great success. After more than 1000 kilometres of special stages Carlos Sainz/Michel Perin relegated the Mitsubishi duo Stephane Peterhansel/Jean-Paul Cottret (F/F) to second place with a two-minute lead. While Carlos Sousa/Andreas Schulz completed Volkswagen's exploit with fifth place overall, Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/RSA) and Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (RSA/D) retired after accidents.

Top 10 positions for Volkswagen driver Rahel Frey at season opener

At the season opener of the ATS Formula 3 Cup at Hockenheim the Swiss Rahel Frey made a strong debut in the Dallara F307 Volkswagen. The female racer of the Dutch van Amersfoort Racing team clinched tenth place in both races. Her team-mate Laurens Vanthoor was less fortunate. The Belgian was not able to move forwards at the start because a vehicle in front of him had stopped. Vanthoor had to chase behind the field from the pit lane and ended up in twelfth place. In the second race he was forced to retire after an excursion off the track.

Jetta TDI-Cup USA

Successful season opener of the American "touring car school"

The Jetta TDI Cup started to its debut season at the VIRginia International Raceway with 30 highly motivated contenders. After numerous changes at the front of the field and a race that remained thrilling all the way to the end, Mark Pombo won the inaugural round of the first American diesel-powered racing series ahead of Derek Jones and Jimmy Underhill. Following the example of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, the Jetta TDI Cup is staged with centrally fielded Volkswagen Jetta cars powered by 2.0-litre TDI engines. The one-make cup is intended as a reasonably priced entry-level series for talented youngsters aspiring to a career in touring car racing.

Wesbank Super Series South Africa

One-two victory for Cristiano Morgando

At the third round of the Formula Volkswagen season in South Africa Cristiano Morgando celebrated a one-two victory. In both races Gavin Cronje finished as the runner-up. 14 talented youngsters had competed in the event staged at Scribante as part of the Wesbank Super Series. On the second race weekend of the South African Polo Cup Bryan Morgan and Gennaro Bonafede each won one round. Since Bryan Morgan finished the second race as the runner-up behind Bonafede, he was the overall winner of the aggregate of both races.

ADAC Formula Masters powered by Volkswagen

Season preparation: youngsters in introductory course at Oschersleben

24 young drivers successfully completed the introductory training course of the new ADAC Formula Masters series for rookies at Oschersleben. Besides theoretical contents such as flags and regulations as well as a tyre training session, starting exercises and drive training with the 145-hp standard Formula ADAC powered by Volkswagen car were on the agenda. The season will kick off at Oschersleben, Volkswagen's home circuit near Magdeburg, on the Pentecost weekend (9-11 May).
