The Argentinean has even increased his lead and is now 2'24 ahead of his countryman Tomas Maffei (Yamaha) as well as 6'39 in front of Czech rider Josef Machacek (Yamaha).

The first 6 trucks have finished the 5th special, which has been won by Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz), who picks up his 35th victory on the Dakar, and in no small measure! The leader of the general standings in the truck race, Russian Vladimir Chagin (Kamaz) stopped for 20 minutes near the 300 km point of the day's special. Having also stopped to help Frenchman Olivier Pain (Yamaha) after his crash, Paulo Goncalves (BMW) has been re-classed by the race officials. As a result, the Portuguese rider wins the day's special, picking up his first stage victory on the Dakar, 2'18 ahead of Chilean "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia) and 2'19" in front of his team-mate, Dutchman Frans Verhoeven (BMW).In the general standings, Spaniard Marc Coma (KTM) remains in the lead, 10'14 ahead of Frenchman Cyril despres (KTM), 18'32 in front of Chilean Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez (Aprilia) and 21'42 ahead of Portugal's Paulo Goncalves (BMW), who is in 4th place.

311 - Novitskiy takes the road to Iquique

After injuring his wrist, Leonid Novitskiy (BMW) turned tail and returned to CP2 at the 259 km point to be examined by the race doctors. In the end, the Russian erred on the side of caution and decided to head straight to the bivouac in Iquique via the road, even if it meant a penalty. In fact, the car is currently being driven by his co-pilot, German Andy Schulz.
