Quotes of the stage
Pal Anders Ullevalseter : " Une speciale pour les grosses motos " Head :
A fantastic stage for me. I started third and after 40km I was in the lead. Today was a route for big bikes. We could really attack and in the last hours I was riding at more than 160km/h. It's perfect!
Cyril Despres: "I trust my KTM"
There was only a small section of sandy tracks and about 20 km of sand dunes. It's always a pleasure to ride that. The sand dunes have different colors and different shapes. There are bushes here and there. It was cool when the liaison section started then it got hotter fast. It is much easier to stay focused when you drive a bit fast. I trust my KTM and my tires. I knew I would drive fast and it would be fine.
Alain Duclos: "I believe in it"
Today's special stage is not decisive but the one tomorrow will be. Still it was important. I was 13 min behind Fretigne. I gained 10 min back... it's already something. If I'm in the same shape tomorrow, it will be fine. But nothing is ever certain. I have to watch out... I have someone big in front of me. I am clinging on to the Top 5 because it was my goal. I know that David Fretigne had other ambitions but well... I am happy about today but the game goes on. As long as the finish line has not been crossed, I believe in it...
Christophe Declerck: "A great way to finish"
This morning, I had fun in the dunes. I did not lose time and I found the right course. I came out of the dunes and I had already passed ten or fifteen bikes. After that I was not fast enough at top speed. I was afraid that Rafal Sonik would catch up with me because he is much faster than I am. My top speed is 125km/h. It was a fine day. I am glad I won two stages in a row. It allows me to have a great way to finish and come back next year...
Stephane Peterhansel: "Performance was with us..."
It was a bit of a special stage with not-so-easy dunes in the morning. Then after that there was a lot of very fast tracks where we really went full blast. As opposed to riders who have to mind their tires, we stay at full speed and manage nothing. The car is holding and so are the tires. We had to be careful still because at more than 170-180km/h, a curve can arrive really fast. But it was a great stage for us. The feeling that remains in this Dakar however is disappointment. We knew we had a fast car but we hoped it would be reliable. But we were bothered by small issues we had never had on other raids. Things we could not have anticipated. Without these problems we could have fought for the first place too. Before today's victory, we were at five victories for the team, which was already one of the best scores for a BMW. It demonstrates that performance is with us... and with our car.
Nasser Al-Attiyah: "Sainz didn't let me pass..."
Sainz didn't let me pass. I finally managed to pass him in the last straight stretch. But it's ok. It doesn't matter! It was a very, very fast stage, not technical but I'm pretty happy. We did a good job. The section in the dunes was too short. I will do my best but it might not be enough. If it works... so much the better.
Carlos Sainz: "Nasser's attitude was not fairplay!"
Logically Nasser was behind. I was passing by bikes and so was he... we were in the dust. At one point, he passed me and hit me and then - when he was in front of me - he started zigzagging in front of me! This is not fair play at all! If I had seen him in my rearview mirror and if I had started doing the same, he would not have passed me. Two days ago, I stayed in the dust for 120 km! What is absolutely not normal is that a teammate would hit you. No, I don't think I have won the Dakar quite yet.
