ELISABETH 'BETTY' KRAFT - Quad
From the ocean to the desert, from Jet-skis to quads... Betty Kraft navigates from one passion to another with the same enthusiasm and liveliness. She is discovering the Dakar, a childhood dream of hers. "I discovered quad-riding with my husband, Pierre, who works for Polaris", tells Betty, French jet-ski speed champion and world jet-ski raid champion. "He took me to the desert in Tunisia and I loved it. When I stopped jet-skiing, I wanted to carry on competing, so it was quite natural that I took up quad riding. I've taken part in the Transfenec eight times and also in the Gazelles Rally for the last three years with Isabelle Castel, and we won both times. As a surprise, Isabelle had the idea of doing the Dakar and I ended up being enrolled without knowing it. It was a great surprise, I was really pleased... So, together we found sponsors and I set off with the budget which we were going to use for the Gazelles in 2009... Isabelle made a sacrifice to make me happy!"
The story thus started on 3rd January: "On the first special, I told myself, 'great this is cool', but on the second I found it very hard, especially the 600 km link stage which was really tough for me. I was in pieces when I arrived! Today, I really enjoyed myself. The tracks were very technical and really had to be ridden properly. I've now understood that the Dakar is a race where you can never take the time to reflect, you just need to keep going: riding, watching the road-book, showering, sleeping... but never stopping!"
Like many competitors, Betty is discovering South America. "I'm delighted to be here, because I wouldn't have come if it wasn't for the Dakar. I think the country is marvelous and, like all the contestants, I amazed by the welcome we have received, it's great!"
