Pierre Lartigue, last year's winner, increased his lead over Bruno Saby today by almost 30 minutes when Saby encountered mechanical difficulties. It would thus appear that, with only 4 days to go in the rally, Lartigue must be heavily favoured to win.
The motorcycle section is much more competitive with Stephane Peterhansel winning today's stage and closing the gap to just 4 minutes 34 seconds, promising a very close finish. Peterhansel has won this section of Paris- Dakar, which was one year Paris-Cape Town, 3 times since 1991.
