KTM factory rider Sam Sunderland injured, out of Dakar

Yet another example of how quickly things can go wrong in this event.

Sam Sunderland went into Dakar as one of the favorites among KTM riders and drew first blood, winning the first stage of the event. The British rider has now exited the rally with some bones broken and his Dakar dream now over.

The 25-year-old crashed just past the 65km mark, suffering a collarbone and shoulder injury in the shunt. Fellow KTM rider Ivan Jakes stopped to check on him before moving on. After being treated at the scene of the accident, he was there airlifted but walked to the helicopter under his own power.

After leading the rally the opening day, he got lost during the second stage but has been making up ground since. Ironically, he also exited the rally in the fourth stage last year, but due to an engine failure.
