10th Place For X-Raid Driver Al Attiyah
For the competitors today 666 kilometres were on the road book, from Morocco's capital Rabat to Agadir. After a short liaison (122 km) the X-Raid drivers Nasser Saleh Al Atttiyah and José Luis Monterde started on the first African special stage with a distance of 123 kilometres. The route was over 70% new and the navigation sometimes pretty tricky.
Nevertheless Al Attiyah was pushing hard with the powerful BMW X5 and finished on 10th place, 12 seconds ahead of the works Nissan of Colin McRae and 3'25 min. behind the winner of the day, Robby Gordon (VW Touareg). Spaniard José Luis Monterde in the second X-Raid BMW X5 achieved place 24 (9'50 back). In the overall classification Al Attiyah is ranking on 11th place 4'03 min. behind overall leader Robby Gordon, José Monterde is on place 24 (11'11 back).
Tomorrow the first longer special stage (381 kilometres) is awaiting the competitors of the Dakar 2005 leading them from Agadir to Smara. At the beginning high speeds are possible but soon the track will change to a more rocky track and will force the drivers to reduce their pace. Slow and fast sections on a twisting track will follow before the Special will end with a very long shott.
