Tiago Monteiro "Signs Up" For The Dakar 2005

After being invited by Total Portugal Petroleos, Tiago Monteiro will be present in the 2005 edition of the Paris/Dakar Rally which started January the 1st. in Barcelona. As was the case over a decade ago -- since the partnership between TOTAL and the organisation of the most legendary motor race in the world began -- Total Portugal Petroleos again decided to invite one of the most important representatives in motor sports for a journey which promises to be unforgettable and which will show him the ins and outs of the Dakar 2005. It may be recalled that Total had planned a similar trip last year and for which the young driver was also invited, but the cancellation of various stages in Mali caused Tiago Monteiro's trip to Africa to be delayed for exactly one year.

Sponsored by ELF for several years now, Tiago Monteiro again warmly welcomed the invitation he was offered, as, even for him, this is a most unique race. Monteiro said "this is an unparalleled challenge. I have always been tremendously curious about the Dakar and I consider it to be, primarily, a fantastic adventure. After last year's setback with the cancellation of the stages which were part of our program, I confess that my hopes of going to Africa to take part in this trip had reduced drastically. Also for this reason, the fact that Total invited me again made me extremely happy and left me, once again feeling quite nervously excited."

Part of a caravan which will include other of ELF's guests, Tiago Monteiro will accompany the stages of the Dakar Rally more or less from the middle of the race, with a three day stay programmed in Atar (Mauritania), arriving on a day of rest, the 9th of January, and returning on the 11th after the stage between Atar and Kiffa.

The TOTAL Group, which owns the TOTAL and ELF brands, amongst others, became a partner of T.S.O, and more recently of A.S.O, for the Dakar Rally over a decade ago, with the two main aspects of this partnership continuing, as in previous years, to include the supply of fuel to all of the teams and the organisation's vehicles and also providing assistance to the amateur teams in the Total Fair Play Trophy and the ELF Motorcycle Trophy. Besides this important partnership which directly affects the race itself, the TOTAL Group's association to the Dakar reflects some of the concepts which underlie the company itself, like solidarity, audacity and the spirit of adventure.
