Tragedy clouds the Dakar today. During Stage 13 of the rally between Labe in Guinea and Tambacounda in Senegal, a child was hit by a car and died while being air lifted to a nearby hospital. The entire Dakar caravan mourns his death and the loss for his family.

At the Tambacounda bivouac Bailey distributes writing pens to Mr. Ibrahim for local school children as part of Bailey's Pens-for-Kids-to-Learn campaign. Mr. Ibrahim is president of the parents association for the school of Tambasousse, a village close to the airport in Tambacounda.

Gache finishes in the 16th position in Stage 13 improving his overall standing to number 12th. Driving the 348 kilometer special was challenging because of the dusty conditions and narrow trails. Passing was near impossible at times.

Stage 14 begins Saturday January 14th. A 254 kilometer special from Tambacounda to Dakar. The course will run along the Senegalese tracks. The special is longer than last year's and there are numerous changes in direction creating challenges for the navigators. Navigation mistakes will likely create opportunities for some and tragic loss of time for others.
