Szilveszter and Kátai got injured
The Szalay Dakar Team did not have such a good day on Wednesday, since the Romanian Zsolt Szilveszter had an accident in the morning on the connection stage towards the special, while balázs Szalay and László Bunkoczi had to handle technical problems and wait for the race truck to get some help. Szilveszter, who had his shoulder and foot injured, was taken to to hospital to the Canary Islands, similarly to Péter Kátai, who got some help from the Szalay team. He got injured on the very same day and broke his thigh-bone.
The Slovakian member of the regional MOL formation, Jaroslav Katrinak, fell once but finished the day rather successfully. However, Ákos Varga declared this day one of the worst in his life, he could not complain about his position.
Ákos Varga (KTM, 35th):
"This morning, on my way towards the special, I've seen Zsolt Szilveszter, even talked to him. He did not have that accident on the time-measured stage, in fact someone bumped into him from behind on the way to the finish. He hurt his foot and shoulder, and although I did not arrive there right after the accident, but he was absolutely conscious. That is why I don't understand rumours spreading about the event. I could even talk to Peti Kátai, who fell at 150 km/hrs. He failed to notice a rock in the huge dust, and bounced off it. His thigh-bone broke and hurt his shoulders as well. He said he was unconscious for a few seonds, but it is considered normal in such cases.
"It was one of the worst days of my life, especially my worst Dakar day, eventhough my results are relatively good. My speedometer has been out of order for two days now, and received a huge penalty yesterday for gexceeding speed limit, so I set off from around 200th position today. I couldn't see a thing due to the dust, and when I met the two guys who suffered accidents, I was careful not to fall too. Part of me said; speed up, while the other kept careful."
Jaroslav Katrinak (KTM, 11th)
"I fell once on the rocks because the bike bounced off one of them and I could not hold it. The left side of the bike got damaged a bit, that's all, luckily I did not get injured. It was the first day of me riding alone, so I could test navigation a bit. I got into critical situations twice, whaen it was not staright-forward on the itinerary which direction to go to, so I followed the traces."
Balázs Szalay, László Bunkoczi (Opel Frontera 125th)
"We had an extremely stony, rocky track again. Although we did not damage the car, still, something broke in the trapesium, so we had to wait for the race truck. We spent approximately two hours with repairing it. The team finished an awful day overall, and I am glad that doctors we talked to said that Zsolt will be fine, which is the most important right now."
