Thursday, January 1, 2004 - Quotes from today's Prologue
Richard Sainct (FRA - KTM, 3rd) - 001
There is more to lose than to win on this kind of prologue. It was a nice show without too many risks. Anyhow, I find it nice to leave under the snow and to go towards the sun.
Cyril Despres (FRA - KTM, 2nd) - 002
This snow was great. I don't know how many snowmen were in the crowd, but with the number of fans I really felt like a rock star. If you look at it, if we stopped the Dakar now, I would finish ahead of Sainct. It really is strange to see all this snow and all these people, whereas in a week or two, we'll be really hot alone in the desert.
Fabrizio Meoni (ITA -- KTM, 22nd) - 003
Because of the snow, it was like going very slowly on the bike. I didn't take any pleasure riding. It was cold, the snow made things too slippery.
Alfie Cox (RSA - KTM, 21st) - 010
When I left home (in South Africa) it was 35C, so it was tough for me. This weather is not for me, I'm a man for the sun.
David Fretigne (FRA -- Yamaha, 5th) - 012
For this first special, with the pressure, the stress, I really enjoyed myself. It reminded me of some enduro races. I lost a bit of time at the beginning because I didn't want to take too many risks.
Jean-Louis Schlesser (FRA -- Schlesser Ford, 21th) - 200
The conditions are not the best for our type of car that slips a lot. With a buggy, it's even harder but I'm very happy with the car. I really hope that we can beat the Mitsubishi and Nissan teams. We weren't expecting this weather, but in a week we'll be under the sun.
Stephane Peterhansel (FRA - Mitsubishi, 8th) - 203
We damaged the front of the car a bit on the bumps because it was very slippery. It doesn't matter because it's a part of the car that was conceived to be eventually damaged without bad effects on the rest of the car.
Jutta Kleinschmidt (GER - VW, 13th) - 204
It's a beautiful scenery but to drive on it's another story. The track was really very slippery with high jumps so this prologue was short but quite tricky.
Ari Vatanen (FIN -- Nissan, 34th) - 205
I was as cautious as possible because it really is a tricky kind of exercise. I believe I didn't even jump over the bumps. I come from a cold country but haven't been living there for quite some time, so I'm not really used to it. I actually hate these conditions, I can't wait for Africa.
Luc Alphand (FRA - BMW, 5th) - 207
Of course I love the snow, but driving on it ! I still had fun because it's better for the show. But you had to be extra careful. I was also our first experience together with my co-pilot Henri Magne, so I was very careful.
Johannes De Rooy (NED -- DAF, 1st) - 411
Despite the slippery course, everything went well and it was fun. And to see all this crowd it pleasant.
Andre De Azevedo (BRA -- Tatra, 4th) - 412
It was fun. All we were missing was a pair of skis. It felt like being on a skating rink.
Philippe Jacquot (FRA -- MAN, 30th) - 422
The course was tough. We therefore went very carefully to be able to say hello to the fans. I hope the crowd enjoyed it.
