DE VILLIERS AND STEENKAMP CONQUERED MOROCCO ON TRUSTY CAN-AM BOMBARDIERS

Both South African competitors in the Quad Category of the 2007 Dakar Rally, Cornel de Villiers and Johan Steenkamp (Team Can-Am MD Rally Sport), conquered the first African stage that started in Nador and finished 648km later in El Rachidia in Morocco.

De Villiers kept his fourth place in the overall standings although he lost time to the frontrunners on this rocky and dusty stage. He finished the stage in fifth place and about 42 minutes behind the stage winner, Carlos Avendano (Suzuki 450LTR). Dionisio Santos (Can-Am Bombardier MD Rally Sport) was second on the Bombardier DS650X followed by his team-mate, Jose Gonzalez with Josef Machacek (Yamaha 350YFZ) fourth.

Johan Steenkamp was the 11th quad home and will tackle Stage Four from the 11th place in the overall quad category. Thirteen quads are still in the race.

Thirteen quad competitors will start Stage Four of the Dakar Rally in Morocco on Tuesday, 9 January.
