Dakar 2005: From the stadium to the desert
Riders, drivers and machines have begun visiting rather unusual places and therefore there is the possibility to watch scenes like the one lived yesterday with Isidre Esteve and Marc Coma, riders of the Repsol KTM Team, making one lap of honour on the field of the FC Barcelona stadium only a couple of minutes before the start of the league game between FC Barcelona and Levante FC. During the lap, the riders received a warm welcome from the fans. It was, with no doubt, the most delicate ground Marc and Isidre had ever ridden on and they therefore made a slow lap off the limits of the soccer field.
It was the culmination of a racing day on the stadium with an exhibition, outside the stadium, of the motorbikes, cars and trucks that will be taking part in this year's race, as well as historical models such as the bike ridden by Carlos Mas and the one Nani Roma used to win the race, and cars and trucks of other Spanish drivers, among others the MAN Repsol truck of Juvanteny, Criado and Pardo.
Isidre Esteve: "It's been a unique feeling. I had never stepped on the lawn of the Barcelona stadium and I've done it with the KTM of the Dakar. It's been real fun to ride on the outside of the field and I was really surprised about the warm welcome of all the fans who had already seen the bikes outside the stadium and were not surprised about the lap of honour. It's been very nice and I think that there's going to be a great atmosphere during the days the Dakar is going to be in Barcelona".
