Michel Marchini - AJACCIO DESERT AVENTURE - 020

From Corsica To The Desert

Up until now, all is fine. After his first kilometres on the African continent, the feelings of Michel Marchini were between fear and excitement. The reason he has been able to avoid problems for the first 4 stages and even enter the top 30 overall, is probably due to the fact that he's doing it for his homeland. "As a Corsican in the bike race, I feel like the rally ambassador for my island".

This experienced enduro biker but newcomer on the rally isn't far form the truth. On his website, support messages keep flowing in. And the Corsican certainly deserves it with a 24th spot on the Er Rachidia special. A performance that doesn't seem to surprise him. "I really enjoyed it because it looked like home with small trees and fast tracks".

Marchini remains cool. Despite his position, he knows that the road is still long. That the hardest part is yet to come. "I have no goals except to fiish in Dakar". His main concern is navigation : "I'm still learning. It's the first time in my life that I use a road book and a GPS. I haven't understood everything yet and that worries me".

Rene Metge - NISSAN DESSOUDE - 234

The Real Thing For Bernard Chevalier

"We've only been on the race for four days and already my look on the event has changed". Bernard Chevalier, journalist for the newspaper l'Equipe, has been covering motorsports for numerous years and for the first time, he is doing the Dakar as a competitor. Not with a sporting ambition but "to explain from the inside this race that fascinates me". Every day, he writes a piece for his newspaper. "I wanted to do something for the 25 years of the Dakar. After the 100th edition of the cycling Tour de France on the same roads as the first race back in 1903, the idea of doing the race seemed logical. His project will be fully accomplished only if he makes it to Dakar with his driver Rene Metge, a three time winner of the event. The goal is to write a story every day, "and if we get to the Lac Rose, it'll mean that I was able to write all my pieces".

But the worries of the race make his mission a difficult one. "The ideal thing is to finish the stage early so I can write my story from the bivouac in the press room. If I can't make it on time I just call the office to dictate it". All the ingredients are there to achieve his goal : "with the Dessoude team and Rene Metge as driver". The adventure however almost ended during stage 4, 3kms from the end of the special when the car hit a rock and it crashed on its side. "I thought we would have to wait for assistance but thanks to Rene and a local peasant with his tractor, we were able to carry on. During the day I discovered all the things that go through the mind of a competitor. We went through the good and bad moments of a Dakar".
